Will the Academy Diss Kate Winslet Again?…and other Oscar Buzz

There have been few really good movies released so far this year, and most of the ones I’m looking forward to aren’t coming out until the end of 2008. I suppose that keeps them fresh in the minds of the Academy as Oscar season approaches.

Here are the upcoming releases on my radar:

1. Revolutionary Road: In theaters December 26. Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio team up again for a movie about disturbia in suburbia. Winslet is the youngest person ever to garner five Oscar nominations, and odds are she’ll get another for this film. She’s won none.

2. Rachel Getting Married: Okay, so this one has been in theaters for over a month. I’m still hoping to see it, though! Rumor has it Anne Hathaway will be nominated for her role as a woman coming out of a 10-year stint in rehab to attend her sister’s wedding.

3. Frost/Nixon: In theaters December 5. I wrote my high school term paper on Watergate and have always been fascinated with Richard Nixon. Ron Howard directs this historical drama about Nixon’s first public interview after resigning, so it should be pretty good. I doubt it’s winning any awards, though. Speaking of which…

4. Doubt: In theaters December 12. I trust Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman’s judgment, so I will be seeing what looks like a suspense-filled adaptation of an award-winning play about a nun who suspects a priest of wrongdoing in their Catholic school.

5. I’m begrudgingly adding The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (released Christmas Day) and Australia (released Thanksgiving Day) to my list as well. I’m not excited to see them nor do I expect they will live up to the hype, but they’ve gotten so much buzz I feel I have to at least familiarize myself.
