Name that Quote

Facebook’s “25 Things” trend has spawned many new lists and questionnaires. One of my favorites is this one: look up (or recite) a quote from 20 of your favorite movies and see how many people can guess correctly. These are the 20 that occurred to me the fastest, how many can you identify?
1. “I [...]

“Who are you wearing?!” … My Oscar de-brief

So, four of my six Oscar predictions were correct … eh. I don’t think there were any surprises this year, as evidenced by the fact that most of the ceremony ran on mute all evening in my home.
In fact, the two categories I predicted incorrectly – best supporting actress and best director – were [...]

Top 5 Holiday Movies (My mouth’s bleedin’, Bert!)

Suddenly the holidays are upon us. Today was my last official day at the office, and I’m excitedly relaxed at the prospect of two weeks of vacation. Plenty of time for watching movies – the same ones I’ve enjoyed every year I can remember and will enjoy for many more. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! [...]

Changeling (Just say “yes” to editing)

I saw Changeling in the theater a few weeks ago. Although its weak title suggests something science-fictionish, the movie is actually based on a true story.
Christine Collins, a single mother in 1930s Los Angeles, begins living a nightmare when her only son disappears while she is at work. The corrupt L.A. Police return a [...]

Will the Academy Diss Kate Winslet Again?…and other Oscar Buzz

There have been few really good movies released so far this year, and most of the ones I’m looking forward to aren’t coming out until the end of 2008. I suppose that keeps them fresh in the minds of the Academy as Oscar season approaches.
Here are the upcoming releases on my radar:
1. Revolutionary Road: [...]

Beautiful Girls

Timothy Hutton and I have similar movie taste. I know, who?
He starred in Ordinary People, Everybody’s All American and Beautiful Girls, the subject of this entry. All of these films have character-driven plots with complex emotional themes. They raise questions and offer no answers, and I am inexplicably drawn to them.
Beautiful Girls is the first [...]

Top 5 Fourth of July Movies (You’re killing me, Smalls!)

In honor of the July 4 holiday (hurray for long weekends!), I have been mulling over my favorite patriotic movies. It’s not a clear-cut category, or one that I devote thought to regularly, so it’s been fun writing down ideas.
I limited myself to movies I’ve personally seen, so maybe by next year this list will [...]

Time’s 100 Greatest

While pondering my next film rental I came across Time’s list of the 100 greatest movies. I’m not particularly interested in how/why the winners were chosen; I like it because it lets me rate how highly I would recommend each one.
What is missing is a better argument…I’m certain that It Happened One Night is “greater” [...]
